Frank Lampard:Pros and Cons

Updated: Jan 4

Frank Lampard’s name is the one that hasn’t gone away ever since the news of Michael Beales sacking filtered through and it’s fair to say that the fanbase are severely underwhelmed. Talk of protests and James Bisgrove’s job being under threat if he was to go ahead with the appointment of the former England international.

Whilst a lot of this is hyperbole there is a real concern amongst the Ibrox faithful about his credentials to takeover, what some are calling, crisis of a job but there are some pros in giving the former Everton and Chelsea boss the keys to the kingdom in Govan.

Pros
Demands standards.

The players look devoid of any confidence right now and that was plain to see in their embarrassing 2-1 defeat to Cypriot side Aris Limassol in the Europa League and the lack of fight is a circumstance of that. Lampard would come in with an aura and a presence that would pick the team up off the floor and get them playing for the manager because of his name and who he is, he will demand standards and his ego wouldn’t let players slip below his standards.

Contact book.
It’s fair to say that this season’s main issue with Rangers Is the recruitment. With only Jack Butland and maybe Abdallah Sima have made an impact this season with Cyriel Dessers and Sam Lammers especially gaining a lot of, deserved, criticism and they were both signed by Michael Beale.

So, while Rangers don’t have a director of football, right now they don’t have a director of football its down to the manager to sign the players and Lampard will be able to sign a lot of quality players with his wide range of contacts in English football and their academies.

He is an icon at Chelsea and while the West London club have one of the best academies in the world with Cobham, the idea of Lampard tapping into that could be a success and with the failure of a summer, a manager who brings a name and who players will want to play for, can only be a good thing.

Cons

Management record
If he wasn’t called Frank Lampard, he would not be anywhere near the Rangers job. His management career so far very much flatters to deceive. He took a Derby side that finished 6th the previous season and he signed Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori and then finished 6th again.

His first season at Chelsea was a great season on paper, 4th and an FA Cup final. But when you actually dive into it, its not as good as it sounds on the surface.

Finishing 4th with 66 points, the lowest points tally since Everton in 04/05, while also finishing 15 points behind an Ole Gunnar Solskjaer managed Manchester United side. Having then spent £250 million and the got sacked whilst having that squad in 9th and a lot of top players. That squad he had languishing mid table then went on to win the champions league under Thomas Tuchel.

Then he got the Everton job, after the board appointed ex Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez and that had the fans have a real disconnect with the fans. Lampard came in expecting to get that new manager bounce and didn’t really get that, only winning one out of his first seven but he did keep them up and getting the best out of Richarlison and it looked like he was going to push on and get them back to a solid mid table Premier League side. However, that didn’t happen again, only winning three games and getting sacked with the team 19th in the league.

He hasn't done well under crisis

Whilst his record on paper isn't good, it's fair to say that the clubs he have gone haven't been in a good way. Derby and Everton are both in financial peril as it stands and Chelsea last season were a mess but Rangers aren't in a great way right now either. An embarrassing Europa League defeat and three defeats after seven games isn't acceptable for a Rangers team and Lampard's track record of picking clubs off the ground is far from good and his current profile isn't one that suits a Rangers manager.
