What Do Rangers Need In The Summer?

Updated: Jan 4

Following their most recent Old Firm defeat, being succumbed to a 1-0 defeat to their bitter rivals in the Scottish cup semi-final. The game only hammered home the fact that a massive rebuild is needed at Ibrox and how much Michael Beale needs to change.
Rebuild is often an overused and exaggerated word in football, a lot of times when fans talk about needing a rebuild, they often mean they need to replace a few players who have been there for a while. But that not the case when it comes to the blue side of Glasgow.

Rangers have had a stale squad that has needed refreshed for years but for various reasons it has been neglected. Beale isn’t naïve enough to be oblivious to this fact, with the Englishman coming out and saying that could be up to 12 in and 12 out during the summer window.

Rumours are rife with who is set to dumped with James Sands having his loan cut short and shipped back to the States. While, according to the Daily Record, Scott Wright and Jon McLaughlin have been asked to find a new club. Twitter rumours will add £4 million centre half Ben Davies to that list and that’s not it, the easiest thing is to list who they should keep.

James Tavernier and Conor Goldson a long with January signings Todd Cantwell and Nico Raskin seem to be the only starters from this season who would to be accepted by fan base as part of the 2023/24 team. With the likes of Ridvan Yilmaz and Tom Lawrence are in the ‘jury’s still out’ column and the rest should be shown the exit door. Obviously its very much easier said than done, but start with the out of contract players Allan McGregor, Steven Davis, Scott Arfield, Filip Helander, Ryan Jack, Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos should all be out the door. The latter two it’s a shame to see two such talents leave on a free, but this season it’s clear they haven’t been good enough and losses need to be cut when it comes to the squad.

A long with the previously mentioned Wright, Mclaughlin and Davies, the likes of Colak, Sakala, Hagi, Kamara, Lundstram should all be told to find new clubs. It’s clear they all have quality, Colak's 13 league goals this season shows he can finish, but for the way Beale wants to play, he doesn’t have the technical or hold up play required. And that sums it up, the players haven’t shown what they can do enough and should be let go.

As for who comes in, there has been a whole host of names linked with Jack Butland and Kieran Dowell apparently done deals. A lot of names linked have been from the English Championship and lower leagues in England which has been met with criticism from the Ibrox faithful. But if you want a manager to be signing players that he knows, from a market he knows then you have to trust Beale when it comes to that area. The two players he’s signed, he’s made it clear that Cantwell and Raskin were players he wanted, and they have been successes, so you have to trust him.

A whole host of players out of contract, one of the best players loan ending and a bunch of squad players who, simply aren’t good enough to win a league title. The transfer policy at Ibrox should be simple, if they don’t make the Celtic squad then they shouldn’t be at Rangers, if they want to challenge for the title that should be the mentality.
